Receive-first messaging
They text first. TheLocalRing only carries the reply.
A TheLocalRing customer cannot start an SMS conversation. An interested person sees a number on a listing or sign and chooses to text it. That inbound text permits only one-to-one replies about the conversation they started—never marketing, cold outreach, or bulk messages.
A complete example
- 1
A listing explains the number
“Texts use a private reply number provided by TheLocalRing.com. By texting it, you agree to receive replies about this listing. Reply STOP to end.”
- 2
The interested person texts first
“Hi, is the sofa still available?” That voluntary inbound message is the consent record for this conversation.
- 3
The first reply identifies itself
“Yes—pickup after 6 works. Sofa seller via TheLocalRing. Reply STOP to end.”
Where the public nickname comes from
The customer can choose a short public nickname such as “Sofa seller” or “Apartment contact.” Until they do, replies use the neutral label “Listing contact.” It is separate from their account name, email address, and personal phone number. The first reply shows that public label and TheLocalRing so the recipient knows who is answering without exposing private contact details.
What consent covers
Consent covers replies related to the person's own inquiry. It is not permission for promotional, recurring, or unrelated messages. A fresh inbound text is required after the conversation window expires or the number is assigned to someone else.
STOP, START, and HELP
Reply STOP to block further texts through the number. Reply START to opt back in or HELP for assistance. Carrier controls and the application both enforce opt-outs. Message and data rates may apply.
No imported lists or first messages
Customers cannot upload contacts or compose a first SMS. TheLocalRing is not for SMS marketing, bulk messaging, lead generation, account verification, or one-time passwords. Consent is not a condition of buying anything from the customer.
Records and safeguards
TheLocalRing records the inbound carrier message identifier, timestamp, participants, source country, first identification reply, and opt-out state. Message bodies are kept only under the retention rules in our Privacy Policy. Full operating rules are in the Messaging Policy and Terms of Service.
