How do I put a phone number on my résumé without using my personal cell?

The free 14 days

Your first monthly subscription gets 14 days free. You enter a card at checkout, you pick a number, and the card is not charged until day 15. Cancel from the dashboard at any point inside those 14 days and it is never charged; the number keeps working to the end of the free period.

One free period per customer. A second subscription is charged from the start.

Why the monthly plan, and not a pass

Recruiters call. A phone screen is a call, and a recruiter who gets no answer moves to the next candidate. The 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day passes are text-only, built for a classified ad. The monthly plan rings a phone, with 300 minutes of calls included, and the free days are on the monthly plan.

What happens when a recruiter calls

• The number rings every phone you list, up to five, all at once. List your cell, add a partner who screens calls for you, or list nobody — in which case callers hear a short spoken message asking them to text instead.
• Before you are connected, a spoken line reads out the number that is calling. If you are sitting at your current job, you know what it is before you say a word.
• Every call is emailed to you, including the ones you missed. A missed recruiter is a number in your inbox.
• There is no voicemail. If you cannot pick up, the email is the record, and the recruiter can text the same number.
• 300 minutes a month are included, each call counted as a whole minute. Past that, callers hear the spoken message asking them to text instead.

What happens when a recruiter texts

Texts arrive in your email, and in up to four more addresses if you want a partner or a career coach to see them. Reply from your inbox and it goes back as a text from the number. The recruiter never sees your email address or your cell.

Because the texts are email, they are searchable. Forty conversations later, "what did that recruiter say about the salary band" is a search in the inbox you already use.

What it will not do

• It cannot place calls. To call a recruiter back, use any phone you like; this number only receives.
• It cannot receive verification codes. LinkedIn, Indeed, a bank, and most apps refuse this kind of number. Put it in the contact section of your profile, not in your account settings.
• It cannot text anyone first. A conversation begins when a recruiter texts the number.
• No picture messages, no voicemail.
• It is not a second line for personal calls. It is a number for your résumé.

When you get hired

Cancel from the dashboard. Forwarding stops at the end of the period you are in, free or paid. The number stays reserved to your account for seven days, then it is released. Take it off your LinkedIn contact section and your portfolio site when you cancel.
